BSD listening session: "Truthiness" by a superintendent who was chosen secretively and now speaks "openly" about an imaginary budget that will never be put into use. The very BEST thing for the future of Oregon's public schools will be when the state's third largest district is gutted open and the cancers of self-interest and incompetence are removed with public oversight. The unethical relationship between the BEA and the BSD administration has deprived employees of fair opportunities while failing to provide children with the standard of education that should be available to them, given the talent pool at the BSD's disposal. But if you are an unsupervised HR official and you hire people for whom they know instead of for what they can do--and you follow that business plan for a LONG time--well, you get what you get. BSD librarians-turned-principals would NEVER be supervising BUSINESSES with that much unaccounted-for money... So, when you address the taxpayers at the "listening session" (did your PR firm name that thing?), spend a minute to talk about your highly-compensated supervisors and policy people, Jeff. Do you SERIOUSLY think Yvonne Katz was hiring the most qualified administrative applicants 10 years ago? ...Hey, there's a good question for the "listening" session. Along with: You mean we are paying them FOR LIFE?
Hanna is a Beaverton girl who ascended in union politics under Tom Husted, the former BEA uniserve who sat (illegally) on the board of former Beaverton Education Foundation CEO Janet Hogue...all while Yvonne Katz and her HR directors, Linda Borquist and Holly Lekas (Hogue's neighbor), manufactured PERS millionaires and tap-danced on employment rights and equal opportunities in the state of Oregon's 3rd largest school district.
What Ms. Vaandering is really thanking teachers for is their oblivious contribution to a corrupt process from which she benefits personally.
Secretive, self-interested conduct...A business plan she no doubt acquired in Beaverton while highly-paid school administrators drove the Beaverton school system into a ditch.
Um, your second-to-last paragraph, Hanna?:
"In the editorial, The Oregonian calls for us to be 'demanding, confrontational, ambitious.' Yet this approach allows some people to stay on the sidelines rather than be part of the solution."
You have friends in both Beaverton School District administration and at the OEA headquarters who invest a LOT of money in PR people. There is absolutely NO excuse for someone of your stature in the state's education hierarchy to write such a silly, unsupported piece of cliched fluff.
There is not even a good INTENTION evident in your sophomoric entreaty. Your approach to union leadership betrays classroom educators and shelters curiously-qualified veterans. The story of your curious rise to power is the VERY BEST EVIDENCE of systemic dysfunction in Oregon public school leadership.

Former TSPC investigator Nisbet working unethically with Tom Doyle, OEA atty
Her actions were designed to affect the outcome of a federal lawsuit. She lost her job consequently (Like me, she was small enough to fail). The improper use of TSPC "stipulations" and "pass-the-trash" deals effectively lets lawyers and bureaucrats in Oregon education play "God" with student welfare and teacher careers...
